Final Bluff by Linda M. Williams takes us into a world of seedy desires and perilous dealings, where the cat and mouse games played involve local police, the FBI, and a mix of society’s best and worst. Jordyn Gilbert is a single, thirty-year-old professional photographer, who also happens to be a psychic medium, that has done work for the Riverside Police Department involving criminal investigations. When a spirit starts to contact Jordyn with a cryptic message connected to a reading she has done with Dax Jenkins, and she is subsequently questioned by the FBI concerning her relationship with Dax, she is propelled inexorably into an ongoing case with life-or-death stakes. The suspects are plentiful and the tension palpable as Jordyn struggles to unravel both the mystery she finds herself embedded in and her personal emotions, which become increasingly difficult to rein in. Both of these aspects of her life will explode in a ripping climax worthy of a Final Bluff. Linda M. Williams’ Final Bluff is a very easy to read, quality criminal investigative story involving nicely constructed undercover work and very real moments of tension. All the characters are consistent and varied, and the relationships are quite spot on. I thought this was particularly evident between Jordyn and Sam, where the bond of friendship was often tweaked by conflict. Jordyn’s relationship with Luke was also well framed, with an undercurrent of love being hinted at indirectly, which was in no way obvious to the reader. In fact, the overall plot was very good at this as well, where the outcome was far from obvious, hidden by a number of various motives and suspects cleverly built up over time. Final Bluff was a very enjoyable read and the complete package for anyone who enjoys a high quality whodunit adventure.
